While CAL is able to assist a lot of families in our community, many more remain on waiting lists. As a result, CAL is participating in O’Shea’s Monday Fund Days on June 28, 11 a.m.— midnight. 100% of that day’s profits will be donated to CAL’s Rampbuilder Program. O’Shea’s address is 956 Baxter Ave. So, please join us for lunch and/or dinner! Those profits will go to our ramps program which builds ramps and home modifications for families in the community who can’t afford one. A home modification or ramp is such an essential tool of freedom for someone who relies on mobility devices to get around. Currently, due to funding, people have to wait as long as 18 months. Come to O’Shea’s with your friends and family on June 28. The fun you have that day will make a huge difference in the lives of others. Make your reservations today! (502) 589-7373. Reservations not required, but preferred for larger groups. Please feel free to distribute this flier and spread the word to your friends and colleagues: http://www.calky.org/osheasCAL.jpg. The Importance Of SurveysMost of us ignore requests to complete surveys because we are busy and don’t see the relevance. Surveys designed to determine how to improve products and services for people with disabilities should be taken very seriously. If we don’t respond to these requests, how else will we get cell phones we can hear on or adequate health care and access to buildings and needed services? CAL’s website (www.calky.org) contains a link about the 2010 Census, as well as information about why it is important that we complete the surveys and return them. I recommend that anyone who has not returned these surveys check it out. Another survey CAL’s website mentions is about wireless technology. This is a really easy survey to complete. If you would like to see wireless services for people with disabilities improve, please take the time to complete this survey. Visit www.calky.org for the web address to access the survey. It is important for those of us with disabilities to complete as many surveys about our needs as we can. After all, who knows better than we do what we need and what works for us? Blunder-Proof ThunderIt will soon be time again for fireworks and airplanes in the ‘Ville. It’s a wonderful time for fun and excitement, but for people with disabilities, it can be packed with extra headaches besides fighting the traffic when 500,000 people try to leave at the same time. In order to avoid the hassles, it is essential to prepare in advance, especially if you rely on paratransit service for getting there and back. If you do rely on paratransit or fixed route service, the first thing you should do is check TARC’s website for information on bus routes and drop-off sites. When scheduling your ride, be sure to ask how close to your destination you will be dropped off. Do not assume that since TARC is a door-to-door service they can drop you off right at your intended site. Keep in mind there are street closings and detours that TARC has to follow. You will find information about accessible parking spots and other useful information on Thunder’s official website at www.thunderoverlouisville.org. Check out all of the tabs and drop-downs. There are a lot of useful tips on this site for anyone. In addition, do a careful inventory of any issues regarding your disability, whether it is fatigue, hearing loss, prescription meds or other issues, and plan out what you need to do to address these. If you do your homework in advance—don’t wait until the day of the event—hassles with your disabilities should be one less thing to worry about. |

SNOW CLOSINGSAs the
weather becomes snowier and colder, schools and other organizations are
often closed. When inclement weather is predicted, it is a good idea to
call the Center to ensure an event or appointment is not canceled before
coming to our offices. HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMLIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) begins January 4, 2010. Appointments are required to apply for the program, and are being issued, in person only, at the CAP offices each weekday between 8 a.m.— noon, based on appointment and funding availability. (Note: The Newburg office is closed on Fridays for the LIHEAP program due to Dare to Care Issues.) For more details, including directions and eligibility requirements, go to our website at www.calky.org. TAX SITEThe Center for Accessible Living in Louisville will again participate in the VITA Tax Program to file low-income individuals with disabilities’ 2010 taxes. The tax site will be open by appointment only on Tuesdays and Fridays in 2009. Appointment scheduling begins February 2, 2010. If you are interested in this service, contact Beverly Alford at (502) 589-6620 or balford@calky.org. CAL’S BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCILThe Center’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) has been a valuable asset to disabled job seekers in the Center’s employment program. They offer resume writing assistance, presented at CAL’s employment workshops, and educated Center staff regarding current hiring trends. Several members of the Louisville BAC offer mentor opportunities to job seekers during Disability Mentoring Day in October. The BAC members represent large corporations, small companies and nonprofits. It meets quarterly to provide advice to the Center staff, network with one another, receive training related to disability in the workplace, and offer guidance to disabled job seekers via the consumer review. In this review job seekers share their job search story and resumes with the BAC, who in turn offer advice about how to make the resume stronger, as well as where and how to apply for jobs. If you are an HR representative who would like to join the Center’s BAC, or a job seeker who would like to know more about the consumer review, contact Keith Hosey at 502-589-6620 or khosey@calky.org.
